Joe Beef Historical Market - September 13th 2008
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 07-31-2008, 10:12 AM - Forum: News - Announcements - Events - No Replies

Hi Everyone

I am also involved in both the Point St. Charles History Society and the PSC Community Theatre. (For those of you that might not know - Point St. Charles is an old working class district of Montreal).
These two groups will be holding a old historical "Joe Beef: market on Saturday, September 13th 2008. The following are the details in case it may be of interest to you....

POINT ?JOE BEEF? HISTORICAL MARKET ? SEPTEMBER 13TH 2008

The Point St. Charles History Society (SHPSC), in co-operation with the PSC Community Theatre, is planning a Historical Public Market scheduled for Saturday, September 13th 2008.

We hope this will be the 1st of an annual Historical Market event in our community.

This first market will be dedicated to Joe Beef and will take place in the Joe Beef Park located on Centre Street.

We are hoping to have a number of artists and/or businesses rent a booth in the Market in order to promote their goods (or services). We will supply a table, a couple of chairs, an apron etc. to anyone that would like to rent a space. (The rental fee is only $ 25.00 for the day to help defer some of the set up costs.)

You do not have to be a resident of the Point to either visit, or to set up a booth at this event.

We are also planning to publish a small booklet that will list all the participants in the Market. So, if you would like to rent a booth, we will need to know by no later than August 7th in order to allow time to include you in this booklet.

We are also hoping that as many people as possible visiting the Market and/or having a booth in the Market will dress up in period costumes that might reflect the mid to late 1800?s.

We have a number of documents related to this event including a Press Release (English & French) and a Protocol Agreement (English & French); and some historical information about Joe Beef etc., which I would be pleased to e-mail to you upon request.

(If you know anyone that might be interested in having a booth, but would not likely see this notice, please do pass on the information).

We hope that it will be lots of fun so if you have goods or service to sell in the market, please contact us ASAP

  Cemetery Restoration Update
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 07-05-2008, 11:35 AM - Forum: News - Announcements - Events - Replies (1)

Cemetery Restoration Update

As most of you know, almost three (3) years ago in October 2005, we started our plan to restore the broken tombstones in St. Columban to their proper place in the Cemetery. We raised some funds, and promoted this project, and I?m pleased that we have a tentative meeting scheduled for Sunday, July 13th 2008, in St. Columban to finalize our efforts and start the actual construction.
There seems to be a general agreement that this project will consist of building a wall(s) that will include the broken tombstones. (Presently all of the fragments are stored at Kelley?s home and her neighbours are wondering how a cemetery suddenly appeared in her driveway!).
We still do not have a definite estimate of the costs or the time it will take to complete but we believe that we likely have enough funds that are in trust with the St. Patrick?s Society of Montreal. If not, we can certainly determine a way to raise additional monies, if necessary.
So, if it all works out, we should start (and perhaps finish) the construction this year and, at some point to have a proper unveiling of the monument to ou ancestors of St. Columban.

Take Care Everyone,

Fergus.

Trip to Grosse Ile - August 23rd 2008
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 07-03-2008, 04:15 PM - Forum: News - Announcements - Events - No Replies

This information may be of interest to some of you....

I've had a number of people call or write asking about our pilgrimage to Grosse ?le on August 23rd of this year.

Everyone is welcome to join us and there are seats still available.  As the numbers increase we just add more buses.  We're limited only by the size of the boat which holds 350 people.

There is a cafeteria on the Island, but feel free to bring a lunch and enjoy a relaxing picnic inside or out.  There are some picnic tables.  There is also snacks and refreshments available on the boat.

Please pay close attention to the leaving time - 6:00 AM.  We need to meet the boat at the Old Port in Quebec City.  Some tours start from Montmagny or Berthier but the water can be choppy.  From Quebec City, it's as smooth as can be.

For anyone interested in joining us, here are the particulars of the trip:

Grosse ?le and the Irish Memorial

Grosse ?le, Quebec was used as a quarantine station in Canada for more than a century.  The tragedy that took place there in 1847 stemmed from the Great Irish Famine, one of the pivotal events in the history of Ireland. Over 5,000 people died at sea, and 5,424 people were buried at Grosse ?le.

On August 15, 1909, the Ancient Order of Hibernians erected a 46 foot tall stanstead granite Celtic cross on Telegraph Hill, the highest point on the island, to commemorate the unlamented loss of life.  The cross stands today, the eternal guardian over the hopes and dreams of those that came but did not leave.

Each year - rain or shine - we make our pilgrimage to Grosse ?le, saying mass at the Irish Cemetery and laying a wreath at the foot the cross. Please ? join us on August 23, 2008.  All are welcome.  Room is available.  Bring your heart and your imagination.

Leaving: Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 6:00 A.M.- SHARP
From: Picasso?s Restaurant, 6810 St-Jacques, West of Cavendish

Price: $85.00 includes Luxury Coach to Quebec, Leisurely Boat passage along the St. Lawrence and admission to Grosse ?le.

Just thought the St. Columban Cemetery Restoration Committee, & researchers in general, might find the following interesting. It?s an item from the from the April, 2008 (Vol.8, No.4) issue of the
?The Laurentian English Laguage Newspaper? - ?Main Street?

Milles Isles ? May 29th
Cemetery Conservation Conference
By Sandra Stock

The ?Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network? will be holding a conference / workshop, entitled ?These Old Stones? on Thursday, May 29th, at the Community Hall, 1262 chemin Milles Isles, in Milles Isles. The guest speaker will be Charles Merchant, from the ?Association of Graveyard Studies, Vermont. There also will be an in-depth visual display from the QAHN cemetery inventory project that visited close to forty Anglophone heritage Laurentian cemeteries last October and November, and a presentation about its findings. Of the cememteries visited, seventeen are considered to be at very great risk, and all of them certainly require some level of immediate restoration and preservation for the future. The issues of population decline, lack of volunteers, neglect, vandalism, and natural decay will be addressed. Several of these Laurentian cemeteries are all that survives of vaminshed settlements, such as Edina, Scotch Road and Shrewsbury, and the only remaining testimony to our predecessors.

This conference is open to all, and especially of interest to anuone who is involved with the care and maintenance of local cemeteries, but also anyone interested in history, genealogy and the cultural heritage of the Laurentians. The advance registration fee is $20.00 /person, or $25.00 admission at the door. This fee includes refreshments and a copy of ?Quebec Cemetery Heritage- A Handbook?, a publication from the findings of the project.

This event will start at 11:00 am. With Milles? Isles? two historic churches, Mille Isles Presbyterian and Christ Church Anglican, and their two large cemeteries, being open for vistors, along with the visual display in the Hall. The program of speakers will begin at 1:00 pm. There will be two breaks for refreshments.

A few update points on the St. Columban Web Page:-

1.  Jeff did some Maintenance Upgrades in the Discussion Forum

I did a maintainance upgrade to the forums that should be more stable. You may notice some visual changes, here and there, and couple of new features but nothing too dramatic.

  Documentary on St. Columban
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 03-20-2008, 05:37 PM - Forum: News - Announcements - Events - No Replies

Hi;

Marie-Christine Bouguignon, who did so much work on producing our St. Columban DVD, is now doing a documentary in French, on St. Columban. She is looking for a number of people to read the text involved (in French but with an English accent)

Below is her note to me, and the attachment is a list of the people that she will be including in her documentary where she will need the "voice-overs".

Please contact Marie-Christine directly if you can help her....

Thanks

Fergus

Hi everybody,

After the DVD for the project on the cemetery. I?m looking for people to read some short texts for my documentary on St-Colomban.

I need to record the voices of 2 women, 1 girl, and 6 men who can read in french with a big english accent. the list of people I am including is in the attachement.

I need some Qu?becois too, so if you know somebody, that can help me too.

I suggest to do this the april 2 and 3 at 6pm to 9pm in the evening at the apartment of the soundman. The adress is 1220 St-Andr?, at the coner of Ren?-Levesque in Montr?al.

I hope to have positive answers from you, because it is a nice project and with your "voice over" to represent the Irish people of the documentary should make it really interesting.

Thank you very much
