Cemetery Conservation Conference - Milles Isles - Murray_Quinn - 04-11-2008 Just thought the St. Columban Cemetery Restoration Committee, & researchers in general, might find the following interesting. It?s an item from the from the April, 2008 (Vol.8, No.4) issue of the ?The Laurentian English Laguage Newspaper? - ?Main Street? Murray Quinn - St. Hippolyte, Que. Milles Isles ? May 29th Cemetery Conservation Conference By Sandra Stock The ?Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network? will be holding a conference / workshop, entitled ?These Old Stones? on Thursday, May 29th, at the Community Hall, 1262 chemin Milles Isles, in Milles Isles. The guest speaker will be Charles Merchant, from the ?Association of Graveyard Studies, Vermont. There also will be an in-depth visual display from the QAHN cemetery inventory project that visited close to forty Anglophone heritage Laurentian cemeteries last October and November, and a presentation about its findings. Of the cememteries visited, seventeen are considered to be at very great risk, and all of them certainly require some level of immediate restoration and preservation for the future. The issues of population decline, lack of volunteers, neglect, vandalism, and natural decay will be addressed. Several of these Laurentian cemeteries are all that survives of vaminshed settlements, such as Edina, Scotch Road and Shrewsbury, and the only remaining testimony to our predecessors. This conference is open to all, and especially of interest to anuone who is involved with the care and maintenance of local cemeteries, but also anyone interested in history, genealogy and the cultural heritage of the Laurentians. The advance registration fee is $20.00 /person, or $25.00 admission at the door. This fee includes refreshments and a copy of ?Quebec Cemetery Heritage- A Handbook?, a publication from the findings of the project. This event will start at 11:00 am. With Milles? Isles? two historic churches, Mille Isles Presbyterian and Christ Church Anglican, and their two large cemeteries, being open for vistors, along with the visual display in the Hall. As this is a Thursday, it might be difficult/impossible for anyone working, but perhaps there is someone available as I think this event would be of great interest to your project. Also the handbook Matthew Farfan put together on the subject of cemetery conservation would also be pertinent to the St.Colomban situation. I am attaching the information/registration form. Hope to see you. Sandra[/font] Re: Cemetery Conservation Conference - Milles Isles - dublin9 - 05-20-2008 Sorry, I cannot attend the meeting. Anne |
