Note from Brian Brophy

A note from Brian Brophy

My name is Brian Brophy and I live in Pompton Lakes, NJ. My father was
Lawrence Brophy who was the son of Walter Brophy. In picture 1, 3rd picture,
Marcus Brophy is my grandfathers brother and thus my great uncle. I visited
St. Columban many times as a child and also my Uncle Marcus who lived on
Smart Street, Montreal, Canada. He was married
to Eva Brophy.

I believe my Grandfather, Walter Brophy was the son of John and Margaret
Brophy.

I would love to visit St. Columban again some day. I have fond memories.

St. Columban Cemetery Restoration Project Update
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 02-14-2010, 06:24 PM - Forum: News - Announcements - Events - Replies (2)

St. Columban Cemetery Restoration Project Update

[b]This past summer we managed to complete about 75% of our restoration project of the Old Irish Cemetery in St. Columban (near St. Jerome), including building a very strong foundation and three walls.

However, the rain that was experienced almost every weekend this past summer prevented our volunteer bricklayer from fully completing the project.

So, we have decided to start another fundraising campaign this March in the hope of raising the approximate $ 5.000 needed to hire a full time paid bricklayer and complete this effort.

Any company or individual that would like to donate to this cause can simply send a check to the SPS payable the St. Patrick?s Society of Montreal with a note that it for the St. Columban project. (They also have the option of calling the SPS office if they would like to donate with their credit card) and all, or part, of the donation is eligible for a tax receipt.

Our definite hope is that this project, started in 2005, will finally be completed by the end of May to coincide with the 175th Anniversary of the founding of the Parish St. Columban.

Additional details can be found on our site at www.stcolumban-irish.com or by e-mail to info@stcolumban-irish.com

Searching for Photos of People and Places of St. Columban
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 02-14-2010, 06:13 PM - Forum: General Enquiries - Replies (1)

Hi Everyone

Claude Bourguignon is considering producing a ?Family Photo History Book? related to the original Irish settlers in St. Columban and he is searching for anyone that might have photos or family histories that they would like to share.

Over the years a number of you have already contributed photos related to the people; buildings; farms etc. of St. Columban but we think that perhaps there are still a number of photos and documents that have not been shared to date.

So if you have any information at all concerning St. Columban that you have not already sent please do so at your earliest convenience.

You can send them via e-mail to either info@stcolumban-irish.com or directly to Claude at  claude.bourguignon@videotron.ca

If you need additional information please do send us a note

Thanks

Fergus

St Colomban is on Google Street View
Posted by: jeff.legault - 02-12-2010, 02:04 PM - Forum: News - Announcements - Events - No Replies

St Colomban is more on the map than ever these days including Google Street view. Take a look, remember this is a 360 degree view from any point on the road, click and drag the image to move around or use the arrows to move down the road.

http://maps.google.ca/maps?ie=UTF8&hl=en&ll=45.734883,-74.133983&spn=0,359.950733&t=h&z=15&layer=c&cbll=45.738645,-74.136455&panoid=2E0TjQMVuFGFSef1VtnAoQ&cbp=12,315.02,,0,5

This looks to be sometime after the foundations were laid for the walls.

Google News Archive Now Hosting Historical Newspapers
Posted by: jeff.legault - 02-04-2010, 11:54 AM - Forum: History - Memories - Famous Residents - Replies (3)

Google recently (and quietly) added historical newspapers to one of their specialized search tools for a number of world newspapers (mostly from North America). Some of the newspapers of interest to the group include the Ottawa Citizen, Montreal Gazette and the Toronto Star. The search tool will attempt to search the actual content of the newspaper pages and will display the actual page as it appeared in print. Pretty amazing once you start to view the content. Keep in mind these pages have been scanned from old printed copies or microfilm so the search interpretation may not always be accurate depending on the quality of the original. Nonetheless it's valuable tool for any researcher. I was able to find many articles, death notices, advertisements, etc. connected to my family in Ottawa. It provided a missing link to tell some of the family stories we all crave. Not every single day of print is included so far but they may be adding more in time.

Visit this special search interface here and enter a term in "with all of the words" box like Columban or your family name and further down the page look for the "Source" box and enter montreal gazette:

To keep this thread going, please post your search results and share them with the group.

Looking for any information on Kinsellas
Posted by: Lynda DAmour - 12-01-2009, 04:02 PM - Forum: General Enquiries - No Replies

Hi, my husband & I were up to St. Colomban yesterday looking at the cemetary, etc.  My interest is due to the fact that I am putting together the family tree from both my side and my husband's side, starting wit our son & going back.  On my husband's Mother's side, she is a descendant of Thomas Kinsella & Anna Grace who are both buried in St. Colomban.  I would be very interested in knowing if there is anybody who can shed any more light on the Kinsellas.  Please let me know.  Thank you.

Lynda D'Amour
