In the Ottawa Citizen story about St. Columban I note that Claude Bourguignon was able to find the county of emigration in a land record (notarial, I assume) for Fergus's ancestor. Could he do that for anyone else - say myself?  Smile
I have James Walsh/ Welsh and Mary Griffin as the immigrant ancestors to St. Columban. With a name like WALSH any county in Ireland is a possibliity! Griffin is not too unusual either. They didn't stay long in St. Columban - just until about 1840 when they went to Ste. Marthe where this couple is buried.
Any hope?

You can find the story about St. Columban that Janice Kennedy wrote today right on the internet under OTTAWA CITIZEN.  Very interesting article.  This is great for all the out-of-town members.  However, I tried printing the article but only was able to print the last two pages.  Of course, they want to sell newspapers.

Jeff Legault found this interesting record from the Post Office. We always knew that sometimes the spelling is with an o or an u but did anyone every realize that for awhile, the Post Office, spelled it as St. Columbin. Click on the link below for more info.

  Banner & Folded Brochure
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 03-16-2006, 01:16 PM - Forum: News - Announcements - Events - No Replies

Pleased to announce that today, I was able to pick up from the printer, both the Banner and about 1000 folded brochures about our Project. As you know, Kelley O'Rourke designed these brochures, as well as the Banner, and they look very good. The brochures, printed in one colour (Green), came out great. If any of you would like some of these brochures to hand out to your family of firends, just send me an e-mail to fergus@stcolumban-irish.com and include your proper regular mailing address.

The Banner is about 10' long and about 2 1/2' high. It also looks great and says in English and French "St. Columban Cemtery Restoration Project" with our Web Site address. Of course, our main use for this Banner will be for when we walk in The St. Patrick's Day Parade this Sunday (the 19th) in Montreal. After that, if any of you want to use it, to hang up at some affair, or whatever, just let me know and we will certainly try to get this Banner to you.

It is hard to get a good picture of this banner, but we should be able to get some good shots of it when we are in the Parade, and of course, will post these pictures on the web site so you can all really see it...

Take Care

Fergus

The Centre for Canadian Irish Studies at Concordia University was kind enough, today, March 15th 2006,  to send out a copy of our Cemetery Restoration Project pamphlet to everyone of their e-mail list.

With various articles and the support of groups like The Canadian Irish Studies etc., - there should not be too many people, particularly in the Montreal Irish Community, that will not be aware of this effort.

Great Book! - Naming in the Laurentians
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 03-15-2006, 10:07 AM - Forum: News - Announcements - Events - Replies (2)

Joseph Graham, as I mentioned in my last post, is writing an article about our Restoration Project, in the "Main Street" Newspaper that serves the English Speaking community in the Laurentians.

In addition, Joe has just published a new book that notes the history of various towns in The Laurentians.

If you would like information about this book, please click on the following link:-

  Main Street Newspaper
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 03-14-2006, 11:02 PM - Forum: News - Announcements - Events - No Replies

Hi Everyone;

At our last meeting, Alison Connelly, suggested that I contact a newspaper called "Main Street" in The Laurentians, that serves the English Speaking commmunity. I was able to reach the editor and Mr. Joseph Graham who writes regular historical columns about various Laurentian communities, for the paper, will be publishing an article about St. Columban & our Restoration project sometime in early April. Could all of you, that live full time (or part time), in The Laurentians watch for this publication? Mr. Graham has told me that they will not have it in digital form, so we will have to scan it to add it to the site. Mr. Graham indicated that he will also send his written permission to allow us to copy and post it on the main site.
