He married 1893-2-8 at St. Ann's in Montreal:

Catherine Kane, daughter of Peter Kane and Elizabeth Delaney, born in Sillery 1859-6-21, died in Montreal 1945-3-31.

They are both buried in Notre Dame des Neiges, plot I1115.

I can also provide information on their children if you are interested.

  Book Launch and Cemetery Plans
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 06-04-2006, 10:17 AM - Forum: Cemetery Restoration Project - Grave Markers - Lookups - Replies (1)

Claude's Book launch yesterday was great and attended by a number of people from our group including Anne; Kelley; Audrey & Ken... The book, itself is very neat. We took some pictures of the event and hope to post them soon.

Claude also gave us an opportunity to speak to the group in attendance about our restoration project. And we were also able to discuss the project with Mr. Charbonneau, the Mayor of St-Colomban and a representative of the Federal member of Parliment for the area and others - Great conversations and obvious support for our efforts.

In addition, we did slightly update our plan for the monument and Jeff has included an updated view at this link:-

http://www.stcolumban-irish.com/Restoration/Restoration-Proposals.html

Of course, this is still in the planning stage. People liked the idea and certainly the concept of making the wall in brick as per a design used in the Huntington Cemetery which Ken Neil included in his report on possibilities. We'll try to get an image of this brick wall idea posted soon so that everyone can see what we are talking about...

Take Care everyone....

  Montreal in 1816
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 06-02-2006, 09:09 AM - Forum: General Enquiries - No Replies

We may have mentioned this web site before.

It is a McGill University site that mentions a whole bunch of stuff about Montreal around 1816 or so.. (about the same time that first settlers to St. Columban started to arrive in Montreal).

It is fun & interesting to read .....

Note from Irish Embassy in Ottawa
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 05-30-2006, 10:12 AM - Forum: General Enquiries - No Replies

I don't believe that many of our members were actually born in Ireland, however at the request of the Irish Embassy in Ottawa, I am posting the following just in case it is of interest to visitors to this forum:-

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Irish Societies of Canada,

Please find attached herewith a press release from the Department of the Taoiseach from 30th April 2006, which the Embassy feels may be of interest to you and your members.

If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Press Release issued by Department of the Taoiseach, 30th April 2006

Centenarian?s Bounty to be extended following Government Approval.
Irish Citizens born in the Island of Ireland who live outside the State to benefit
The Government has approved in principle the extension of the scheme for the payment of the Centenarians? Bounty to any Irish citizen who was born in the Island of Ireland, regardless of where he or she may currently reside.  Up to now the Bounty, which currently amounts to ?2,500, was payable only to centenarians living in the State.

Commenting today on the announcement An Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern TD, said: "While we now enjoy a flourishing economy and have become a country of immigration rather than emigration, history shows that many thousands of our people had to leave Ireland out of economic necessity.  Many built remarkable lives for themselves abroad and contributed substantially to their adopted countries.  We see huge evidence of this to this day with people of Irish ancestry to the fore worldwide in all walks of life.  Many of these people continued to support families back home and it is well known that the families they had to leave behind relied on the envelopes that would arrive from overseas.

My Government?s decision that the Centenarians? Bounty should be extended equally to Irish people where ever they are in the world is a token of the regard this country has for those people, for what they did and for the sacrifices they had to make.

The Department of Foreign Affairs are informing Irish Community Organisations abroad of this very positive development. This is a further step reflecting the Governments deep appreciation and recognition of Irish Communities abroad.?

We have been noted again in the St. Patrrick's Society of Montreal newsletter, this month of May 2006. It certainly helps to keep our project front and centre in the Montreal Irish community. To see the text of the artcile, please click below...

  Initial Plan for Cemtery Structure
Posted by: Fergus_Keyes - 05-25-2006, 02:18 PM - Forum: Cemetery Restoration Project - Grave Markers - Lookups - Replies (6)

Here is a quick sketch of what we might want to consider, based on our discussion at our last Restoration meeting. (It may be a little hard to see).

At this point it is only in the preliminary concept stage since we do not have permission from the Church yet to install such a structure; and, of course, we do not have a cost estimate at this point.

The proportions are directly related to research done about the Celtic Cross. Of course, the size could change depending on the space available in the cemetery. But, of course, if we, for example made the main walls longer then the arm walls would also change in length etc?.

As you can see, the ends of all the walls are open to allow someone to walk around the structure and view the broken tombstones that we would imbed likely in both sides of the various walls. We have also added a bench in the middle?.

As I say, it is just a starting point ??.

Mr. Charbonneau, the mayor of St. Columban sent us this copy of an e-mail that he received (in French) from a group in France. This group is dedicated to the memory of St. Colomban - of course, our St. Columban is named after this saint who was appearently a favorite of Father Patrick Phelan ......
